Short Review
Though there are many so-called “Jirai-kei *1” members in Circle Lychee, KuraiSekai is just the group whose concept is “Jirai-kei” itself. Their stage costumes are just girly-styled “Jirai-Fuku (Jirai-Clothes)” with pink and black colors, converted into Idol costume forms. However, when we focus on the stories of their songs, we will realize that their concept is derived not only from the Jirai-kei as a fashion-style term but also from the lifestyles and the behaviors of Jirai-kei girls in Kabukicho City within Shinjuku*2, which are called “Pien-kei *3.”
KuraiSekai has expressed ephemeral pessimism of Jirai-kei girls through their songs since their debut-song “So Pien My Life.” Their expressions of lighthearted depressions and the dark side of the minds are now getting more and more vivid in the latter half of their debut-year with songs like “Never Ending Waru Story,” “YAMI♡OCHI,” and “Insane Love Story”. The group just embody the behaviors of “Pien-kei” who have some optimistic and easygoing side in their minds inspite of their depressions and struggles with living.
The promotion of Narumiya Miri from a trainee group Circle Lychee Jukusei strengthened the depressed-pop mood of the group had had. It was also attractive that Yumeno Mia (currently known as Shien Mia / Secto) joined the group as a support member from Shirayuri to Ame whose concept was “subculture-like orthodox style,” completely changing her appearance by dyeing her hair into red and purple two-tone.
Furthermore, the fact that Kizuki Kikoto, who has the career in a truly orthodox kawaii-styled idol group, reveals and expresses her true self after her restart in this group, is the most crutial reason that idols like members of Circle Lychee are necessary in the present-day society. Terms
*1 In Japan, Jirai-kei originally meant a troublesome girl in personal relationships, especially in romances, typically being fond of some genres of subcultures. Afterwards, their characteristic clothes and makeup became popular and simply accepted as one of fashion styles in the society because of their cuty appearances.
*2 At the time of the origin of Jirai-kei, Kabukicho City was the main territory of typical Jirai-kei girls. They have some common behaviors in their lifestyles. For example, they frequently go to male host night club, often drink energy drinks using straws into cans, use characteristic teen slangs, casually have pessimistic view of life.
*3 Originally, “Pien” is an onomatopoeia describing an appearance to be crying. Since typical Kabukicho City girls use the term as the expression of their facile pessimism, Pien gradually became the symbol of Kabukicho Jirai-styled girls and their unique behaviors, then the whole cluster and styles came to be called “Pien-kei” using a Japanese suffix “-kei (-styled, -like).”
